About Dr. Matt richardson

It’s time for something new.

I’m a licensed psychologist who helps men and LGBTQ+ clients break free from the patterns, pressures, and self-doubt that can make life feel heavy. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, motivated, and hard on themselves. They’ve been carrying concerns around body image and eating, identity and self-worth, anxiety, perfectionism, or family-of-origin issues for far too long.

My goal is simple: to give you a space where you feel safe, respected, and genuinely understood. In our work together, we’ll go beyond just talking; we’ll slow down, reflect, and also find practical tools you can use in daily life. That way, the changes we work on don’t just make sense in therapy, they actually stick and feel sustainable.

How I work

We’ll face it together.

My approach is integrative and psychodynamic, which means we’ll explore how your early experiences and relationships have shaped the way you see yourself and move through the world. At the same time, we’ll stay grounded in the present, working in a way that feels reflective, practical, and centered on what matters most to you.

Therapy with me isn’t just about managing symptoms. It’s about having a space where you can be fully yourself, explore what’s been holding you back, and discover new ways forward. I’ll listen closely, ask questions that help you see things from fresh angles, and share feedback with honesty and care. Some sessions may feel deep and challenging, while others bring moments of relief, clarity, or even laughter. Through it all, you’ll have steady support as you work toward changes that feel both meaningful and lasting.

If you’d like to get a sense of who I am and what matters to me as a therapist, I’ve written a blog post about my values so you can make an informed decision about whether I’m the right fit for you.

Therapy with me is

  1. Warm, supportive, and collaborative – a space where you feel seen, respected, and understood.

  2. Interactive and engaging – I’ll show up with you in the work, ask thoughtful questions, and provide honest reflections.

  3. A space for deeper exploration – where we connect the dots between your past experiences, present struggles, and relational patterns.

  4. An investment in yourself – a space to prioritize your growth, well-being, and the changes you want to see in your life.

  5. Specialized and expert care – with advanced training and a focus on eating disorders, men’s issues, and LGBTQ+ therapy, I offer a space for deeper, transformative work.

  6. Flexible and tailored to you – we’ll work together in ways that reflect your unique needs, goals, and pace.

  7. Fat positive, non-diet, and weight-neutral – a place to heal your relationship with your body and food, free from judgment or pressure to change your appearance.

  8. Focused on lasting growth – helping you build insight, tools, and self-compassion to create meaningful change in your life.

Therapy with me isn’t

  1. A weight-loss space – I don’t focus on appearance or diet goals and fully reject diet culture and weight stigma.

  2. A quick or easy fix – real, lasting change takes time, effort, and a willingness to dig deeper.

  3. One-size-fits-all – I don’t follow a rigid or manualized approach; our work will reflect who you are and what you need.

  4. Just about symptom relief – we’ll go beyond surface-level solutions to explore the patterns and dynamics keeping you stuck.

  5. Focused only on “fixing” you – you’re not a problem to solve; therapy is about understanding, accepting, and creating meaningful change.

  6. Emotionally avoidant – we won’t ignore the uncomfortable or vulnerable parts of your experience, because that’s where healing happens.

  7. A passive experience – I’m not a silent observer, and therapy requires active participation to create real growth.

  8. For those seeking short-term solutions without connection – the therapeutic relationship is central to how I work, and lasting progress comes from trust and collaboration.
