VIRTUAL THERAPY ACROSS Massachusetts
You don’t have to hold it all together here.
Specialized care for LGBTQ+ and male clients navigating body shame, eating concerns, and identity-related stress.
You’re here because
You’ve spent years trying to fix your body instead of feeling at home in it.
Maybe you’ve stayed in control, tracked every detail, and pushed yourself to keep everything together. Or maybe fears about who you are and whether you’ll be accepted have left you feeling disconnected, like you’re always performing for others instead of just being yourself.
For many men and LGBTQ+ folks, the pressure to look a certain way or live up to rigid expectations of masculinity and success can feel relentless. It makes sense that you’d feel exhausted or alone. You’ve put in so much effort, and yet the same patterns keep pulling you back. That doesn’t mean you’re broken—it just means you’ve been carrying more than anyone should have to carry alone.
If you’re here, it’s because some part of you is ready for change. You want to feel at home in your body. You want to feel steady and connected. It’s possible, and I’d be honored to help you get there.
Maybe you…
-
You hold parts of yourself back because you’re afraid the people in your life won’t accept the real you. It feels safer to keep certain things hidden, even if it leaves you feeling disconnected.
-
You criticize your body and overthink everything you eat, striving for control—but somehow always feeling like it’s slipping away.
-
You center your life around the gym, like your worth depends on how hard you push—and feel shame when you fall short.
-
You tell yourself to “man up” or “get over it,” while ignoring the parts of you that need care and attention.
-
You convince yourself no one would truly understand—or that opening up will only make things worse.
-
You replay conversations in your head, worry you said the wrong thing, or feel like you’re always one step away from messing it all up.
Hey. I’m Dr. Matt Richardson.
You’ve always been enough. I’ll help you believe it.
I work with men and LGBTQ+ folks who feel caught in cycles of body shame, food struggles, and the constant pressure to keep it all together. If you’ve been putting on a good front but feel disconnected underneath, you’re not alone. Carrying the expectation to be strong, desirable, or unaffected, while ignoring your own needs, can slowly wear down your confidence and sense of self.
This work is personal for me, which is why I’ve made it the focus of my training and clinical expertise. There aren’t many therapists who are specifically trained to work with men on body image or disordered eating, and even fewer who approach it with an affirming, nuanced perspective. As a gay psychologist, I bring both my lived experience and my clinical expertise into the therapy room. I know how healing it can be to feel genuinely seen and supported, without judgment or minimization.
In therapy, we’ll work together to uncover what’s been keeping you stuck, understand the patterns that no longer serve you, and open up space for a life that feels lighter and more fulfilling.
MY AREAS OF EXPERTISE
Take a deep breath. You’re not alone in this anymore.
-
Living authentically as an LGBTQ+ person can bring unique joys and challenges, especially in a world that doesn’t always feel accepting. You may be questioning your identity, managing family or societal rejection, or carrying the weight of harmful messages about who you “should” be. Therapy provides a safe, affirming space to explore your experiences, build resilience, and create a life that feels true to you.
-
Society often tells men to stay strong, suppress emotions, and handle everything on their own, but this pressure can lead to feelings of isolation, stress, and disconnection. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, perfectionism, or relationship struggles, therapy offers a space to unpack these challenges, explore what’s really driving them, and learn to approach life with greater confidence and balance.
-
Struggling with body image or disordered eating can feel overwhelming, especially when it feels like your worth is tied to how you look or what you eat. Therapy can help you challenge unhelpful beliefs, break free from harmful patterns, and build a healthier, more compassionate relationship with your body and yourself.
How to get started
01 - Reach Out
Take a look around to get a feel for who I am and how I work. If it seems like we might be a good fit, fill out the contact form. I’ll get back to you within two business days to schedule a free 15-minute Zoom call where we can talk through what you’re looking for, answer any questions, and see if working together feels right. If not, I’m happy to offer referrals.
02 - Jump In
Once we’ve scheduled your intake, I’ll guide you through setting up your client portal on Sessions Health. Before we meet, you’ll fill out a few forms to help lay the groundwork. During our first session, we’ll go over your history, talk through what’s bringing you in, and start shaping some therapy goals together.
03 - Feel Better
Sessions are 55 minutes and typically happen once a week, unless we decide otherwise. Together, we’ll explore your past, make sense of what’s happening now, and build tools to help you move forward. Between sessions, you’ll have chances to apply what we’ve worked on—and ideally, start feeling more grounded and more yourself.
